When the Camera Comes Out, I Begin to Belong
Finding Home Through the Lens – First Days in Zadar
After years in Ireland, we’ve finally landed in our new home — Zadar, Croatia. It’s taken me two weeks of rest, wandering, and letting the rhythm of this place settle in. From the misty greens of Ireland to the sun-drenched stones of Zadar, Croatia.
For the first two weeks, I felt suspended — between places, between versions of myself. I rested, I wandered, I tried to feel at home, but something was missing. It’s strange how the body arrives long before the spirit catches up.
And then today, I picked up my camera for the first time.
No plan — just a walk with my husband and our puppy through the streets of this beautiful city.
That’s when the change started to happen — not with suitcases or paperwork, but through the viewfinder.
When I start to frame a new place through my lens, it begins to feel real. The corners, the colours, the light… they shift from being unknown to something I can connect with.
Only when I create do I start to settle.
Only when I see the city form through photography does it start to feel like mine.
Zadar is still new, still a mystery — but now, finally, the story begins.
